Who's the guy on the Pion of Christ?

The one who was very pale and dressed in like black cloak or a robe. In the beginning he set off a snake on Jesus and a bug was crawling in his nose. Was he the devil? He was trying to deceive Jesus wasn't he? Im very confused about his role, help?
