What do you think of piercing a two or three year old boy's ears?

I recently met a woman with a child and said that's a very cute girl. The child had hair past its shoulders and two pierced ears. She corrected me (not rudely) and said he was a boy. I just want to see what other people think. Personally, I wouldn't do it that young on a girl but for a boy, I think ear piercing should totally be his choice. I don't think it was unreasonable to ume that it was a girl and I don't think it's doing him any good to have everyone think he's a girl. I don't think that I am unenlightened. I just think the parents are trying too hard to be new age cool at the expense of their son. What do you think?
