How do you change the water in fishbowl with goldfish?

i want to clean my fishbowl and i have 2 goldfishes in there how do i do this without harming them..months ago i used water from sink and t took the gold fish out when i added water from the sink and put the goldfishes back, later on i went to check on them and they were floating on top of water (dead) what went wrong?
