Whats the role of a music producer?

you hear things about rick rubin and butch vig and stuff yada yada. why do they go as much acclaim as they do if all they're doing is recording peoples music? its like 'ooh i recorded the beastie boys and red hot chili peppers' so now hes 'legendary' producer rick rubin. WTF?
