Terrible eyesight; should I switch to contacts and when will my vision stabilize?

I'm 20 years old and my prescription is about -8.5 to -9.5 for both eyes. I've worn gles all my life since about 2nd grade. Will switching to soft contacts help my prescription to stabilize and if not, will it ever?
