Should I get Christmas/Hanukkah gifts for my coworkers? I'm a temp.?
The general rule of thumb is that no gifts are expected of the temp, and the temp is unlikely to receive office gifts, particularly bonuses. However, from a strategic standpoint, if you are a temp-to-permanent hopeful, you should do everything you can to make a positive impression on the staff. But you will need to do it in such a way that they don't feel obligated to reciprocate. The best way to do this is to leave a plate of treats in the kitchen or break room, with a nice note from you -- be sure to bring enough for everyone. This way the gifts are not individually given, and individuals will not feel pressured to add you to their personal gift lists. The lone exception is the boss -- it wouldn't be a bad idea to give a separate box of whatever treat you provide to your immediate supervisor or the head of the division or company.
