How do you encode your files so that others can't read what is in them?

Instead of trying to encode your files. You should hide them. Make a folder where you want to keep these sensitive files and after they are in there right click the folder and select the box that says hidden. It will ask if you want to include subfolders and files . Select yes and your good. If the folder still is visible go to tools, folder options, and in advanced check do not show hidden files and folders. When your ready to view them again uncheck that last box.
